When I first heard of this, I imagined a John Tanner action packed homage to the cult Driver series or at least something in that particular light. And after seeing Ryan Gosling as the lead role, I really felt the blood pumping with excitement.
The film started of slowly, so naturally I thought that it represented a slow-paced prologue into the adrenaline pumping action. And after I've seen Ron Perlman and the utterly amazing embodiment of Walter White, Bryan Cranston, I was absolutely crazed. The film continued on... And on... And on... Until, finally, nothing happened.
It's like fucking Andrei Tarkovsky and fucking Lars von Trier had a mentally undeveloped drunkard child who, while on cocaine and meth, decided to both write and direct the mentioned "new cult classic". The film is filled with boring long-ass shots that practically serve no purpose, other than counting Gosling's facial hairs. Not that he doesn't have them and I'm not mocking him in any way, but there's nothing else for you to do. And these just go on and on... Even the music is meant to invoke some sort of deep melancholic feeling and give the entire movie some extremely unneeded emotional and pessimistic depth.
The only words of praise I can give it is concerning the driving scenes. They are the only thing done right in the entire movie, apart from Bryan Cranston's standard top-notch performance. That's about all I have to say about it. I'm really disappointed and maybe even a bit disgusted. So, there you go... Another catastrophic waste, considering the acting moguls it came with.
