Monsters

So, the movie is called Monsters, it's a low budget one (about $15000 in all) and has 2 actors? Ok, let's give it a try. Why not. Can't expect much when you know that the director (Gareth Edwards), the soundman and two main actors make the whole crew. But this guy wrote, directed and edited the whole thing fitting all that into such a low budget! He must have suffered from some sort of creativity explosions by the time this movie was made.
And that's an effort worth attention, don't you think?

Presented as a sci-fi thriller this one gives you all but the expected (something like 'starring: weird aliens'). I'll give you a short plot just to help you understand the thing. NASA discovered another life form in our galaxy, and they kind of helped it get to the earth and reproduce. Whole of Mexico was targeted as an infected zone, and America built a huge wall in order to prevent aliens visiting them. But I don't see the point of that, they didn't have their passports with them. Anyway, he is a photographer, Kaulder, and is in Mexico just like she (Sam) is. He works in her father's company who kind of orders him to get her back home in one piece. The journey starts there.

The last thing I expected was the story of two people traveling through the jungle, getting to know each other as much as falling for each other during that time, not focusing the whole story on the monsters.
Imagery is just great! One camera was used, and I can say I was left breathless with these shots. The shifting focuses feature is something I really liked.

Acting was pretty decent if we're talking about Whitney Able, and a great job was done by Scoot McNairy.
Soundtrack is another thing Edwards is probably proud of because it completes the feeling.
Storytelling is very simple, yet it succeeds in pulling and keeping you in. Few giggles here and there are just unavoidable. Jokes are realistic, dialogues even better.

What can I say... Low budget, high rates. Edwards has definitely showed the world that people can do a lot with idea and good will. The movie itself deserves 7, but because of this man and what he has done, 8 will be my personal rating for this one.
