All the J.J Abrams and all the Spielbergs of the world would not manage to pull something like this off. Since the premise is pretty much equal to the highly praised Super 8, I am daring enough to make a comparison between the two. In the red corner: Hollywood's child flick revisited mentored by J.J and Steven - Super 8. And in the blue corner: The British underdog of the world's filmography - Attack the Block. I have to say, it wasn't much of a fight, really. The Brits have decimated the over-confident Yankees.
Joe Cornish, nothing more than a close friend to the British film scene, wrote and directed this 'One Punch Mickey' wonder film. And, boy, what an excellent job he did! He incorporated the harsh living conditions of a ghetto London block with an alien invasion, of all things! What he got was one hell of a blend.
What you get by seeing this is low-budget CGI made look fucking awesome, loads of British ghetto slang which only makes it more fun, a somewhat inside look to a how a ghetto kingpin works, gangster gamer kids and some pretty fucking amazing humor!
It's truly a thrill ride from beginning to end with excellently paced storytelling and well-written dialog interlaced with, as said, amazing humor. True, it isn't ground, nor a heart breaking story. But, what it is - is loads of great fun. And, if you ever have the need to chillax and have some fun, have a look at this marble. You will not be disappointed.
8 out of 10.
P.S. A stoner Nick Frost - priceless.
