Why all that hate?
I've seen the trailer (unpromising as hell), read the reviews that prompted me, at first, to go to the message boards and, secondly, to actually watch this one. And, man, there were some hardcore haters out there, trashing everything about it - including Mr. Hanks who, in my Movie Bible, belongs to the apostles. I honestly liked him in almost everything he did (pre or post Meg Ryan) and was wondering what prompted this massive flop at the box office?
As opposed to other shitty movies I've seen of late (see my previous entry with Mr. Carrell), I did manage to watch Larry from the beginning to the end, without pausing once. It's not a masterpiece, it does have its all-American moments and to add insult to injury, it also introduces Julia Roberts as a University professor prone to alcohol (not your cup of tea, Julia)....but it also has a certain charm that Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding), script writer here, adds.
When one chooses to ignore almost non-existant role (as it should be) of Rita Wilson (who somehow always finds her cameo way into her husband's movies), the plot is reminiscent of Community (where Hanks is a mixture of Jeff and Pierce) and has that predictable happy ending and a "it's never too late" motto stuck to it.
Seriously, guys, it does not deserve all the hate it gets.
